Common questions
- Do I need a server?
- No. You can open a local KeePass (.kdbx) file, with a key file if you use one — it is decrypted on the device, and no network request is made for vault data at all.
- Which servers are supported?
- Bitwarden- and Vaultwarden-compatible servers: your own instance, the bitwarden.com cloud, or its EU instance. The server only needs to be reachable from your device over HTTPS. You obtain the account from whichever service you choose — VaultGuard creates no accounts of its own.
- What do I need to sign in?
- For a local vault: the .kdbx file and its master password. For server mode: the server address, your login and your password. Nothing else to register — VaultGuard does not create accounts of its own.
- Where do I find the server address?
- It is the address of your Bitwarden or Vaultwarden installation — the same one you use for its web interface. If someone else set the server up, ask them for it.
- How is two-factor authentication configured?
- On the server. VaultGuard is a client: it works with whatever your installation has enabled and does not manage its security settings.
- My server uses a self-signed certificate — what now?
- The app asks you to confirm the certificate’s SHA-256 fingerprint on first connection. If that fingerprint changes later, you get a warning.
- AutoFill is not working
- Enable VaultGuard under System Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords. If the vault is locked, the extension will ask you to open the app and unlock it.
- Is the app paid?
- No. VaultGuard is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 licence: there are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions and no paid features in the app, and the developer receives no money of any kind. What is available in your vault is determined by your server and your plan with it, not by the app — the app itself unlocks nothing and sells nothing.
- Where does my data go?
- In local mode, nowhere: the file is opened on the device. In server mode, only between your device and the server you specified. The app contains no analytics, no telemetry and no crash reporting.
Status
The app is in active development. Managing logins, the generator, TOTP, AutoFill and biometric unlock are implemented; passkey support is still preview. No independent security audit has been performed.
